MBT child
MBT-C is short for Mentalization based treatment for children. The treatment is for children roughtly 5-12
years old with externalizing or internalizing disorders.
Children attending MBT-C may have problems with anxiety, depression or behavioural problems. MBT-C may also be suitable for children with traumatic experiences or children who have experienced loss.
The aim of MBT-C is to enhance the child’s capacity to regulate emotions and to mentalize about self and others. In MBT-C, work with parents is an important part, where parents are helped to reflect on their child in order to understand them better, and be able to support the child in a flexible way.

This book This book is the first comprehensive clinical intro-duction to a time-limited model of MBT with children. Mentalization is defined as the ability to understand behavior (one’s own as well as others) as intentional and based on inner mental states, such as thoughts, feelings, wishes, and intentions.
It has shown to be an important aspect in order to understand resilience in case of trauma, attachment security and mental health. The ability to mentalize is a key competence in order to feel in control of our own behavior and to have meaningful, lasting relationships.
Mentalization helps us make our own, as well as others’, behavior meaningful and predictable, therefore being crucial in the development of a coherent self and identity as well as regulating our behavior and feelings in relation to others.
The manual is written by an international team consisting of researchers and clinicians,
with different areas of expertise.
